When the bartender returned he stared bemusedly. I couldn’t tell by his mouth as it was covered by mustache, but his eyes danced. I learnt his name was Samuel McKenzie. I gave him my name, of which he seemed rather indifferent. I then looked him in the eye and said, “Rosalie Poe, as in Edgar’s sister.”

That got his attention. He grinned at me. “No shit,” he said. “Edgar never mentioned having a sister.”

Swallowing down those particular nuggets of vulgarity and disappointment, I pressed on “You remember my dear departed brother?” I asked. “I’m most anxious to inquire what happened that put him in the hospital with that horrid doctor.”

“I do, Miss Poe,” he replied. “He was a regular patron here, even when not drinking. I’d like to say we were friends and I greatly enjoyed his poetry.”
