MORE POTSHOTS FROM A GRUMPY OLD MAN IN THE TWILIGHT OF A MEDIOCRE CAREER

Well, the Iranian mess continues with no end in sight. President Trump appears content to wait for the Iranian people to find their backbone and take their country back. Israel seems content to stand behind Trump and take potshots at Iran, knowing we will protect and fund them. Meanwhile, the liberal media continues to frame the whole affair as Trump’s fault, regardless of the ruthless Iranian regime that has killed thousands of its own people.

Mr. President, this is getting old. End this war one way or another.

Meanwhile, is there still a war in Ukraine? Whatever happened to the daily wall-to-wall coverage?

So, what is it with people who come to the United States seeking a better life, only to bring their flags and old-country grievances with them?

I’ve grown tired of seeing vehicles painted in the colors of another nation’s flag or homes displaying the banner of a country they chose to leave behind. If you want to celebrate your heritage, that’s one thing. But if you’re coming here to build a new life, your loyalty should be to the country that welcomed you?

Fly the Stars and Stripes or fly nothing at all. If the old country was the better deal, the return trip is always available.

The Obama Presidential Center and Basketball Gymnasium in Chicago’s Jackson Park is about to open, with festivities scheduled around Juneteenth, or as most of us still call it, June 19.

The sprawling complex, which resembles a nuclear reactor silo dropped into the middle of a residential neighborhood, was originally projected to cost $350 million. Today, estimates have climbed to roughly $850 million, a half-billion dollars over budget.

And don’t believe for a minute taxpayers escaped the bill. Public funds have covered approximately $229 million in infrastructure improvements.

After all that, visitors will reportedly be charged $30 for admission. That’s roughly double the cost of visiting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, dedicated to a man many consider the greatest president in American history.

Don’t look now, but California may be experiencing a seismic shift. Not beneath the earth’s crust, but in its political landscape.

Are Democrats about to be shown the door? Steve Hilton, running for governor, and reality television personality Spencer Pratt, running for mayor of Los Angeles, think so.

Democrats have enjoyed one-party dominance in California for sixteen years. The results? Rampant homelessness, crushing taxes, endless regulations, and a steady exodus of residents and businesses.

One has to wonder how all of this will play for Governor Gavin Newsom and his presidential ambitions. Democrats may want to look elsewhere for their next standard bearer. Someone like Sandy Cortez. In today’s wacky political climate, that suggestion may not be nearly as far-fetched as it sounds.

There is a long-overdue implosion taking place at CBS and its once-proud program, “60 Minutes.” What was once great journalism gradually transformed into a mouthpiece for the political left.

After Scott Pelley publicly criticized his bosses, he was shown the door. For good measure, correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, and executive producer Tanya Simon were also let go.

The remaining trio of Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim lamented the departures and announced they would remain to preserve the program.

Good luck with that. It was people like them who helped drag one of television’s greatest news programs into the sewer of partisan journalism.

Finally, it appears the political shenanigans of Chicago’s ruling elite may have caught up with them. The Chicago Bears have taken another significant step toward relocating to Hammond, Indiana, after the team’s Board of Directors voted to advance plans for a proposed $5 billion stadium development.

While this tickles the funny bone of this Packers fan, it raises an important question: How will Indiana taxpayers feel about helping foot the bill? The Bears have indicated they would contribute roughly $2 billion toward the project, leaving billions more to be financed through infrastructure spending, tax incentives, stadium authority bonds, and other government magic tricks.

The embarrassment belongs to Chicago and Springfield. Losing one of the NFL’s founding franchises would be a stunning failure of civic leadership. Should the Bears ultimately leave, Illinois would no longer have an NFL franchise while neighboring Indiana would be home to two.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, perhaps that’s the real takeaway. For nearly two and a half centuries Americans have argued about wars, immigration, taxes, politicians, spending, and the media.

Yet we’re still here.

The republic stands. Millions still dream of coming here. Despite the headlines, there remains no better place on earth to live, work, raise a family, and pursue your dreams.

Not bad for a country that was never supposed to survive.
