Apparently, there are Congress-persons (can’t use the term “men” anymore – not PC) planning on boycotting (person-cotting?) President Trumps First State of the Union address. Evidently, Reps Frederica Wilson, Maxine Waters, John Lewis and Earl Blumenauer have their collective shorts in a wad over the fact it is Donald Trump giving the Address. Others are considering following their lead, “bravely” waiting to see what kind of backlash might follow.
Did you know that State of the Union Messages to Congress are mandated by Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution? Let that sink in, the process is mandated, orally or in written format, by the Constitution, but certain members of Congress will not be blessing us with their attendance. If they do not attend, might they be considered derelict of duty? Just asking.
So, to be clear, these four Congress-court jesters are refusing to attend an annual rite of passage by a sitting president of the US for personal reasons having to do with President Trumps’ existence. He breathes the same air we do. Evidently, a $1.5 trillion tax cut, the near-decimation of ISIS, a GDP above 3%, an unemployment rate of 4.1%, and the creation of 1.7 million jobs, all in a year, are not enough? Neither is a soaring stock market, reduced illegal immigration, or black unemployment at historic low levels enough either.
After all, he had the audacity to call Haiti a s**thole! He’s not allowed to say that, they roar indignantly! Apparently, only rappers, Hollywood, millennials, and reporters from CNN are allowed to use that kind of language. Regardless whether he was right or not.
A look into the folks who are shunning the State of the Union is revealing. Fredericka Wilson – it’s really hard to take her seriously about anything. She probably would do everybody a favor by not attending. The cowboy-hat wearing Ms. Wilson represents the north side of Miami and is known primarily for stirring racial divide. Her true reason for not attending may very well be they won’t let her wear one of those silly hats.
John Lewis – the once prominent civil rights leader has since aged into, who I believe, to be a bitter and cynical dinosaur in Congress, having “served” Georgia for over 30 years. I once was watching yet another Congressional proceeding and Lewis became incensed by the answers he was being given. At one point he bellowed, “Excuse me, I am a sitting United States Congressman and won’t be talked to in that manner.” Had I been there, I would have been tempted to remind him he works for us and we pay his salary. He may have been a confidant to Martin Luther King Jr., but perhaps he should have retired years ago.
Earl Blumenauer – nearly 70, the consummate liberal from Oregon has been mostly a career politician after only seven years as an attorney. Given his liberal record, it is not surprising that he would want to skip an Address given by a president who does not believe in giving away that which he doesn’t own. Perhaps Earl will count his bow-ties that night instead.
And then there is Maxine Waters. The 79-year-old representative is from various districts in California, evidently depending on what is best economically for her and her family. Currently, her Los Angeles mansion, one of several properties, sits in a district she does not represent, due to gerrymandering. (How’s that for irony!) She has been accused of taking money from businesses unethically, arranged special Treasury meetings for her banker-husband, and has been named a corrupt member of Congress many times by the watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. She has consistently shown no respect for President Trump since the day he was elected and, in my humble opinion, deserves no reverence from anybody. To many, me included, she represents everything loathsome about Congress.
Had three white representatives publicly shunned a State of the Union message in this manner from former president Barack Obama there would be cries of racism. Had the former president been female, there would have been screams of sexism. As it turns out, President Trump happens to be a 70-year-old white businessman with no prior political experience, intent on draining the Swamp that is Washington DC. Therefore, he seemingly deserves no special consideration as a member of a “protected class”. Protocol and dignity be damned.
Given his vast accomplishments in only one short year, those Congressman who fail to recognize Trumps successes are exposing themselves as the very creatures of the Swamp we all want drained.
