Despite jeers from a couple of snowflakes, I received overwhelming support from people when they read or heard my last blog about being let go by our local newspaper. And I have to admit, being sacked was not only a shock, it hurt. Obviously, nobody likes to be let go, and I have to admit, in my lifetime, it hasn't happened very often. Even though I was doing it for no pay, I really liked that gig.
So, I was heartened to see and hear encouragement within the community. I was particularly humbled by the devoted support from a wonderful group of widows.
Evidently, part of the reason for my dilemma can be traced to the seventh word in this commentary. The term "snowflakes," was used, which everyone realizes is code-word for whiny, spoiled liberals. I had the audacity to use the term, and other similar terms in past commentaries. And well, apparently in this country one just can't point out the king isn't wearing clothes anymore – it upsets said liberals. It has somehow become "politically incorrect" and woe-be-tied to the person caught in the PC cross-hairs. If one happens to be of a conservative nature in today’s culture one is supposed to remain silent and just let liberals "do their thing."
I understand the need for liberal thinking individuals. Well, sort of. Seriously, there needs to be a counter-balance to every idea or concept, and conservatives certainly don't have all the answers...even me! But as the great Ronald Regan stated, "It isn't so much that liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so many things that aren't so."
Most all of us start out thinking liberally. It's human nature - we want to help others. And there truly are people or causes that need our compassion and help. But that should be our option, not obligation, particularly not at the behest of some pinhead with a specific cause of the week.
When you realize it’s time to grow up, at some point you get a job, get married, have a few kids and commence with the average person's struggle to achieve the American dream. It doesn't matter what race or sex you are, you have a shot at the "brass ring." Because you live in the US of A, the greatest nation the world has ever known, you can now actually see your goal - it's there within your reach if only you keep your shoulder to the grindstone. You realize your dream is not going to happen tomorrow; it will take years of hard work, sacrifice and struggle, but it's attainable...unlike any other country in the world.
And then one day you realize there are those who take shortcuts or drop out completely, perfectly content to let the government take care of them, while they enjoy the American dream on the backs of others. Sensible individuals recognize the American dream will not work if everyone does as they do - we can't all live off the government or soon, the government owns us. You understand this, not only in your pocketbook, but in your soul. It's as instinctual as waking up in the morning.
Yet, there are those that shun work while accepting handouts from the government. They do this without shame - as if we and/or the government owe them something. Many justify it by being victims of some perceived "noble" cause, worthy of participating in your sweat equity. And they vote in large blocs for the politician that promises them even more of what they didn't earn. And along the way you notice the politician is helping him/herself to a healthy slice of your sweat-equity-pie as well. You understand the government makes no money, it's people that do, and the government distributes other people’s money as THEY see fit.
Worse, are those liberals that know better, but justify this lifestyle as it keeps them employed and/or affluent, such as the tenured or double-dipping government employee. Politicians and wealthy-elitist are also part of this group of individuals…although I may have repeated myself. They all game the system through pensions, tax loopholes, and/or clout…on our dime.
The group I haven't figured out though is our media. Other than to sell their wares - information in the form of print, radio, and television - what reason do they have to sit on the sidelines and cheer on a leftist or socialist agenda? The media, evidently desperately in a need of sensationalism, has become the vehicle of broadcast for the left and has ran with it to the point that Pandora's Box may have been opened.
Socialism looms and nobody seems to know how to get the genie back in the bottle. Or perhaps, with the election of Donald Trump, the "silent majority" has finally had enough of the Socialist experiment and stuffed the genie back in her jug.
