After decades of collecting pigeon excrement, and over 140 years after the Civil War, some folks have decided it’s time to remove statues of Confederate soldiers. So, in acts of cowardice, cities too broke to maintain their streets, have been paying to remove various Confederate statues from their perches during the night, much like a thief operates, so as not to have another Charlottesville on their hands. Or they allow others to remove them on their own with no more than a slap on the wrist. Most of these removals have been done without the benefit of debate with the people who don’t mind the statues, which encompasses a majority of the country.
Now, the Daily Journal editorializes that the monikers of military bases named after Confederate officers should also be renamed, principally Forts Hood and Bragg. They reason that since Generals Hood and Bragg fought against the United States, and were rather incompetent commanders, they should not be honored with their name on a military base either. On its face, this is not an unreasonable thought.
However, it should be pointed out that both men had distinguished military careers for the United States before the Civil War, and their failures were at the hands of larger Northern forces led by arguably superior military minds. Therefore, their implied ineptness in the Civil War should not be a determining factor for renaming military bases. Isn’t it a good thing they lost?
Of greater importance though are the questions of why now and what’s next? Personally, I suspect the removal of the statues has nothing to do with racial injustice and everything to do with today’s politicians and political correctness, poor excuses to do anything. Otherwise, should we rename Columbus Ohio, which was named after Christopher Columbus, a man who unintentionally reached America on the way to the West Indies and spread death and disease among the then-current habitants. What should we do about the Memorial statue of Martin Luther King, Jr., who was an admitted Socialist, and an assumed adulterer? I personally find anything Socialist or adulterous repugnant, but would never advocate the removal of the MLK statue. Or what about noted Indian fighter “Buffalo Bill” Cody, should we rescind his Medal of Honor award…again, and write him out of children’s books? Do we really want to blow slave owners’ Thomas Jefferson and George Washington’s faces off Mt. Rushmore and replace them with what…bleeding hearts like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer? (I’m being absurd on purpose, folks.)
There is an old saying about not throwing the baby out with the bath water. What would this country be like had any of those men named above, or innumerable others men and women like them, never existed? No part of “We the People,” including past great Americans who built this country into what it is now, is without fault. That is what makes us human. Let’s call this what it is - because there is a loud angry liberal mob who cannot accept that Donald J. Trump is our president is no reason for appeasement with an act of erasing our history or removal of anything one group of people might find offensive. To acquiesce to people with nothing more than Trump-derangement syndrome borders on insanity. Our past, warts and all, is what it is and has shaped us to be the greatest country in the history of Earth.
Leave our history alone!
I was enjoying a long weekend break with my family when the skirmish broke out in Charlottesville Virginia. With nine grand-munchkins and little access to news, I got behind on updates. Consequently, it was challenging catching up with what actually happened due primarily to media spin. It is much easier to keep up if you are paying attention from the beginning. But I will recount what I think I know.
As I now understand it, White Nationalists, Nazi sympathizers, the “Alt-Right,” and other right-wing groups of questionable character were granted a permit to hold an “Unite the Right” rally to protect a Confederate statue when they were met and clashed with “counter protestors.” At this point, I am not sure what comprises the group of people known as “counter protestors” as the media reports did not elaborate, nor does it appear that group had a permit. Given the media’s account of the right wingers, it appears that “counter protestors” meant “normal people.” The supposed leader of the “Unite the Right” group tried to give his account of the rally, but again, given the times we now live in, was unable to express his First Amendment right of free speech, due to being shouted down by the counter protestors.
Peculiarly, there also was not a proper police presence to keep the two sides apart and a woman was senselessly run over when a young man of questionable intellect, who seemed determined to punish the “counter protestors,” ran a car into the crowd, killing the poor young lady and injuring 19-20 more people. I was able to put this information together by reading and watching various accounts of the unfortunate episode. It is also apparent that the ugly head of racism was a factor in this melee.
However, I am not completely sure this is an accurate account of the events, as it would appear, given the various media accounts from the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, and other media sources of questionable integrity, that somehow, President Trump was involved. It is not clear to me how he actively participated in this vile act as it was my understanding he too was on holiday in New Jersey. Every story of the accounts in Charlottesville from the aforementioned media outlets included bonus coverage and opinions of President Trump’s responsibility in this horrific brawl. Thankfully, in spite of delusional rants by many on the Left, I was unable to find where he had yet been arrested or impeached for his involvement during my sabbatical.
This sad episode in American history was made even worse because, again according to what passes for media in this time, President Trump didn’t read from a politically correct script condemning just the right people for the reasons the media and those on the Left thought should be made. He also had the audacity to point out it took two sides to make a skirmish. He did condemn racism, although evidently not to the satisfaction of the politically correct.
The fact that President Trump didn’t “say” what others thought he should say points to why he was elected in the first place. Those that voted Mr. Trump to the highest office in the world were tired of the polished, politically correct, sanitized and scripted garble that has been spewing from the swamp of Washington DC for decades. And the press ran with this perceived gaffe, completely missing the point that the millions of American citizens who voted for Trump don’t care that he didn't meet the expectations of the Washington establishment. He said what he said, and it was correct and sufficient. No more was needed.
But one has to wonder if there was a more disturbing reason for the media and the Left to implicate President Trump in this terrible and inexcusable event. Gone from the headlines is the story of the looming nuclear holocaust with North Korea, that only days ago seemed inevitable given the perceived failings of our “feeble-minded” President and the erratic behavior of that loathsome dictator, Kim Jong Un. Just before our family left for the Dells we practiced sitting against the wall with our heads between our knees…just in case. (If you are young and have no idea what I’m talking about with that last sentence, ask your folks.)
Also ripped from the headlines is the apparent scandal with Debbie Wasserman Schultz and her Pakistani IT staffer, Imran Awan. Despite the limited media coverage, was it just me, or were you starting to wonder also how much of this story we have not been told, and who might be impacted if the details were uncovered?
And what about Russia? All of a sudden, daily news reports about President Trump being beholden and in collusion with Russian president Vladimir Putin waned somewhat. By allowing this hourly flogging to simmer down, also kicked to the sidelines was Bill and Hillary Clinton’s alleged entanglements with Russia, including the investigation of the Clinton Foundation. I'm still waiting to see why Hillary sold 20% of our uranium to Russia. How did Bill get a $500,000 speaking gig in Russia – is he really that good? By the way, did you know that Vladimir Putin is considered one of the ten wealthiest folks (almost typed men – my bad) in the world?
My father always called me a suspicious individual. Actually, he used another word implying something that dealt with his and my mother’s marital status at the time of my birth. I like to think I’m more guarded about things, particularly when it pertains to matters of the Swamp that is Washington DC.
Despite all the anguished hand-wringing of the media, sports pundits, Hollywood, and football players such as Richard Sherman, I’m delighted Colin Kaepernick cannot find employment in the NFL.
Before I go into my diatribe on Kaepernick though, I would like to ask when sportswriters started thinking we read their columns for their political views? Note to you guys – just like we don’t ask you for financial advice, we could care less about your political views. We pay clowns to amuse us, Hollywood bimbos to distract us, NFL players to excite us, and suffer never-ending advertising in order to find out what is going on with our sports team.
Now on to Mr. Kaepernick - I hope he never plays another down in the NFL in his career. I wish his name would fade in to obscurity, so as not to make him yet another martyr for those with a cause. He’s not Martin Luther King, Gandhi, or Abraham Lincoln, folks. If he does play again, I certainly won't watch him...even if he is playing against my beloved Green Bay Packers!
Born behind the proverbial eight-ball, he is the product of an unmarried and impoverished woman, resulting in his being put up for adoption. I was unable to determine if he ever knew his biological father, but it does not appear that he did. From those rather inauspicious origins, he was adopted by a couple from Wisconsin with two children of their own. Unlike most of us armchair quarterbacks, he was extremely gifted athletically in three sports, and college recruited in two. In addition to a free college tuition at the University of Nevada, he has collected $43 million in his six-year career in the NFL. He was paid $11,900,000 last year, mostly to sit on the bench. For those of you that are adding-machine-challenged, that equates to almost $744,000 per game. $248,000 per hour. $992,000 per…well, you get the point. Obviously, the man plays (or played) a game for a living, and was paid handsomely for his efforts.
Notwithstanding the magnificent success Kaepernick has enjoyed in our country, and despite his beginnings, he began his unpatriotic protest of not standing for the National Anthem in 2016, the year of his $11.9 million salary. Seems that to be the equivalent of complaining about farmers with your mouth full. The National Football League has two owners – the guys that own the teams charter and us fans who pay the freight for all that excess. If we weren’t plunking down the $300 for a ticket, or $200 for a jersey, or whatever outrageous number the NFL Ticket is charging these days, those guys might be just a bit humbler. Remember when NFL players had summer jobs? Don’t fool yourself Mr. NFL player, we can get just as excited watching junior play football on Friday night. It might not be as slickly packaged, but there is more heart and appreciation in those boys, and we can get used to that.
This country has been at war for 16 continuous years, protecting us from another 9/11. As a reminder, over 3,000 people lost their lives that day. Over a million people have lost their lives protecting that flag and Mr. Kaepernick’s right to protest. Millions of parents and spouses wake up every day wondering if their soldier will make it through the day unharmed. That Anthem and that American Flag Mr. Kaepernick won’t stand for means much more to most Americans than some over-paid athlete singing the praises of Fidel Castro.
Television ratings were down in the NFL last year. Polls show Mr. Kaepernick’s hissy-fit was partly to blame. The NFL, long a cash cow gorging itself on its fans wallets, may have realized that perhaps Mr. Kaepernick’s actions were bad for business, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he has been black-balled from the league. It is doubtful you and I will ever know if that is the case. But, given developments with the Baltimore Ravens over the past week, with the phalanx of sports reporters writing from atop their political high-horses, I would doubt any other NFL team even brings Mr. Kaepernick’s name up in conversation again. Why should they with the liberals coming out of the woodwork to tell them what to do. Perhaps Sports Illustrated or ESPN should hire him, at his $11.9 million salary, since they are so sensitive to his plight.
When asked why he was sitting out the National Anthem, he stated, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” For a man of color, I’d say Mr. Kaepernick has been treated pretty well by this country. While he has been out playing a game, people with and without color have been protecting his backside from countries where life isn’t so nice. Perhaps Mr. Kaepernick should share some of his wealth with those oppressed people of which he is concerned about, or our troops fighting overseas.
Despite its flaws, most Americans love this country, it’s Anthem and the flag. It’s a package. She is the greatest nation in the history of the world. Why should we spend one dime on somebody that can't respect our country, particularly those that got so much out of her. I don't want him on my television either.
The NFL doesn’t owe him anything. He owes America an apology.
Last Friday, July 28th about 5:20 PM, I was playing golf, albeit not very well…again, on a beautiful afternoon. It was about 82 degrees, sun was shining, and adult beverages were being consumed by some of my golf mates. OK, I had one too!
At just about the same time, only 55 miles to the north, twenty-eight-year-old Nikia Betts decided to go for a walk on the gorgeous afternoon and got up from the porch she had been sitting to walk down an alley, presumably headed for home. Nikia was both a mother and a caregiver for Abcor Home Health.
For reason’s none of us could possibly ever understand in a thousand years, she and the two people accompanying her were ambushed in the alley by gunmen (plural) and shot at about a dozen times. (Do the math – twelve shots at three people.) One of the gunman, a waste of human flesh that has yet to be identified, looked the poor woman in the eye, then shot her in head…in front of her 4-year-old son! While they were at it, they also shot her nineteen-year-old male companion, and then for good measure, shot the 4-year-old boy too, before running like cowards to pile into a Chevy to make their getaway. Nikia died about a half hour later. The other two were shot in the arm and survived, thus pretty much ensuring the continuation of the vicious human tragedy cycle for generations to come when they seek to extract their revenge.
It wasn’t enough to shoot the boy’s mother in front of him, but the social degenerates had to shoot the kid too? A 4-year-old? What kind of a sadistic, savage animal can do that? It bends your skull trying to wrap your mind around the kind of violent inhuman instinct to shoot a woman and her baby. Oh, I imagine that Nikia had the audacity to break off an arrangement with one of the attackers, or possibly said the wrong thing at the wrong time by challenging some schmuck’s manhood, or maybe turned somebody in for dope dealing so as to keep the poison from her son, surely acts that had to be atoned for in gang-speak. But it boggles the mind that such transgressions could also include the shooting of an innocent 4-year-old boy.
At about that time, I wonder what bar, ballgame or expensive steakhouse any of the fifty Chicago alderman, or possibly Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel were settled into on someone elses dime? How about Illinois Speaker of the House, Mike Madigan, or possibly Governor Bruce Rauner, where were they entertaining themselves, at our expense? Maybe we should include Mike Madigan’s daughter, Lisa, in this group too. After all, she is only the longest serving Attorney General in Illinois history, thanks to dad, who is the longest serving state speaker in history. Anyone know where Senator Dick Durbin was bestowing his wisdom on that Friday? (Quick - name our other Senator.)
You see, they are the people we schmucks in Schmucksland elected, and handsomely pay for the rest of their lives, to protect people like Nikia and her son from predators and goons running amok in our neighborhoods. And it seems Nikia’s neighborhood, those encompassing the south and west sides of Chicago, are among some of the most unsafe in America, where human consciousness and decency croaked long ago. Those areas have become the subject of national news and even the President has urged those in control in Illinois to do something. Where is Black Lives Matter? Where is the outrage?
Speaking of national news, what about all those highly paid op-ed writers at the various Chicago and state papers – yes, I’m talking to you Clarence Page, Steve Chapman, and the Eric Zorn’s of the state - why can’t you stop philosophizing about everything that is wrong with Trump and instead put some pressure with your majestic opinions to something that matters to those poor souls in Chicago? Is it that it doesn’t sell papers or that those people don’t matter?
Since the area is predominately black-on-black crime, is there any better example of abject racism…going unchecked? Given the options at their disposal, such as the National Guard, is our Illinois’ governments inaction not as criminal as those doing the shooting? If not, it’s at least as inexplicable. Justice would dictate that they should be required to move to those areas until it has been cleaned up.
These shootings were just three of the eighteen people shot in nineteen hours in Chicago, 31 over the entire weekend. In all, so far, this year over 2,150 people have been shot in the Windy City, 377 of which have died. Think about that – Chicago is averaging 307 shootings per month or 10 per day! Those poor souls have become rabbits in a neighborhood of coyotes. For the love of God, those in charge in Illinois need to get off their butts and do something. Or we need to vote their butts out!
The other Senators name – Ladda Tammy Duckworth. She doesn’t seem to be doing anything either.
