Did you know George Washington was not a member of a political party, before or during his presidency? In fact, he railed against political parties in his Farewell Address, as he was fearful of conflict and stagnation. When one observes the politics of America today, is there any doubt about the veracity of Washington’s wisdom and foresight?
Well, we wound up with political parties anyway, starting with Washington’s immediate successor, John Adams, of the Federalist Party. Since the election of Abraham Lincoln, the Democrat and Republican (GOP) parties have been the only political parties of control. Nineteen Republicans and 13 Democrats have since been elected to the office of the president.
Last week, I gave you some insight, in my opinion, of the deplorable state of the Democrat party. Sadly, they don’t have a monopoly on decay and stagnation.
As a Conservative primarily following the Republican party candidates, it appeared to me the GOP first started coming unraveled with the election of Barack Obama. His policies and direction seemed to unleash a torrent of radical Leftists with their hair-brained ideas that had been previously held in check, simply due to common, hard-working Americans quietly ignoring their existence. By the end of Obama’s term, the onslaught had become so prevalent that some in the GOP relented to the pressures of political correctness. Better to concede, and then lie to the constituents back home in order to preserve the fat, cushy positions that a life in politics provides.
This act by so many in the GOP, called RINO’s (Republican In Name ONLY) spawned the Tea Party, which through government interference (as in Lois Lerner) could never quite gain a foothold. It also splintered the GOP party.
Then we the people elected Donald Trump on the GOP ticket with a mandate to drain the Swamp. One would think that was a great concept, particularly for the Conservative base, including pompous souls like Mitch McConnell and Karl Rove, who claimed to have contempt for most things Obama.
Nobody saw Trump’s election coming – why, hadn’t Hillary already been coronated? Had everything gone to plan, and Hillary did gain the Oval Office, the GOP could go on pretending to fight the evil Dems, while accomplishing little for their constituents. But they could go home, pound their chests, and talk about how they tried and you should vote for them so they continue the good fight. It seems as if they prefer being in the minority, showing a clear lack of leadership skills.
The problem with the election for the GOP is that many of those members of the GOP also happen to be Creatures of the Swamp too. You see, Swamp Monsters of any ilk, like to play political games and act important while protecting his/her position at all costs. This includes deserting the new president, who happens to have been propelled to the head of the GOP party by his election and has no intention of becoming a Swamp Monster. He doesn’t need their money and is currently the leader of the free world. Like rats off a sinking ship GOP Congressman are still deserting in droves.
Consider that, with a majority in both the House and Senate, a majority in the Supreme Court, and Trump sitting in the Oval Office, what Republicans have accomplished since the 2016 election. I’ll wait while you try to come up with an answer. The recent pork-laden Omnibus spending bill, which forked over half billion dollars to Planned Parenthood, would not be a good place to start with a list of accomplishments.
Democrats regularly talk about impeaching Trump, who hasn’t done anything impeachable, and hardly anybody in the GOP is standing up for their president. The Mueller investigation grinds on, and there is no groundswell of Congressmen on the right pushing to end this expensive witch hunt. Hillary Clinton, arguably the biggest criminal in US history, goes unpunished, and most amazingly, un-investigated by corrupt FBI leadership. Where is the Republicans outrage? Why is every Republican, with the exception of Donald Trump, afraid of Hillary?
In their customary practice of spreading as much rancor as possible in order to sell news (as opposed to deliver it), the media is jabbing GOP Congressman to see if they intend to support Trump in the 2020 election. The media seems to be having a hard time getting anyone to “take the bait”, with all the GOP Congressmen wanting to take a wait-and-see approach. What kind of support is that?
And finally, state-wide, consider what the Republicans are doing in Springfield to tear Mike Madigan’s hands off our throats? I’m asking for a friend.
Wikipedia says this about the birth of the Democratic Party… “(it) evolved from the Jeffersonian Republican or Democratic-Republican Party organized by (Thomas) Jefferson and (James) Madison. The party favored republicanism; a weak federal government; states' rights; agrarian interests, strict adherence to the Constitution; and it opposed a national bank, close ties to Great Britain and business and banking interests.”
Does this remotely sound like the platform of today’s Democratic party? Actually, it sounds more like the basis for the what most of us thought the Republican party represented up till a few years ago, before the GOP donned sheep costumes.
Eventually, the Democratic party made a sharp left turn with Franklin Roosevelt, which surely caused Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to roll over in their collective graves. Despite the best efforts of Harry Truman and John Kennedy to right the ship, LBJ, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama managed to bring the “Titanic” back to its fateful route with bad policy and/or amoral leadership. Our ancestors will be paying dearly for the election of those four men for a long time. I didn’t mention Carter as, although a seemingly decent man, he had no idea where he had been, where he was, or where he was going. Much like the Dem leadership of today led by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, with their porn actress mascot, Stormy Daniels.
This past week, the DNC hit the proverbial iceberg when it actually filed a lawsuit because they didn’t win the past presidential election. Anybody smell Hillary in this? This has to be the epitome of childish, sour grapes behavior and should be laughed out of court. Filed in the southern district of New York (Schumer and Clinton territory), which I imagine has the most Obama appointees, they claim that Trump campaign managers conspired with Russia and Wikileaks to damage Hillary by hacking the DNC servers. Having bled their base dry of campaign money, this suit seeks millions of dollars.
A few images form in my mind about this:
I wonder if, in their quest for more money, they considered the fact they will have to give up those DNC servers, the same servers they refused to turn over to the FBI earlier? (By the way, who else gets to “refuse” the FBI?) Or, like Hillary, will they be allowed to “Bleach-bit” and smack the servers around with a baseball bat?
Secondly, form a mental picture of Russian president Putin being served papers and consider the odds of him showing up for court. Or of Julian Assange of Wikileaks leaving the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
In the face of all that Trump has accomplished, the DNC is still throwing a tantrum about his election. They are throwing down any roadblock they can to try and trip him up. How is that good for the country? What has he done, since becoming president, that has not been in our best national interest? I keep asking that question and have yet to receive an answer. If any of you know, I’m all ears.
I know a lot of good people who happen to be Democrats. I understand (and agree) with their disdain for people like Mitch McConnell, Richard Nixon, Tom DeLay, or Karl Rove. I appreciate the fact that, on its face, the Democratic party might seem more compassionate toward the struggles of the common man and the youthful mind being attracted to that ideology…if only it were true.
I don’t comprehend though, how those same good people, having matured past the age of childish exuberance, can identify with the likes of the people that have taken over their party and are seemingly attempting to rip this country from its Republic roots to, evidently something that resembles socialism. Why would those smart folks align themselves with people the likes of “I’ll say anything” Hillary and Schumer; dingbats Pelosi and Maxine Waters; alleged tax cheat Al Sharpton; the nefarious Jessie Jackson; the “Cowardly Lion” (Lyin’) Ted Kennedy, the embarrassment that is Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the socialist Bernie Sanders, “Moonbeam” Brown of California, or even more locally, the iron-fisted Michael Madigan reducing the once-great state of Illinois to the brink of bankruptcy, if only it were able.
My grandfather, who lived through the Great Depression, and understandably believed in Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson, was a staunch Democrat. He was a precinct committeeman in the southern Kankakee district for many years, back when the vote was taken in the old Chebanse fire department. He believed so passionately in the Democratic party, the inscription “A Democrat” was etched for eternity into his tombstone.
I often wonder if he were alive today, would he be uncomfortable with that epitaph?
Former FBI Director James Comey started his get-rich book promotion tour recently by unashamedly sitting down for a heavily-edited puff piece with Clinton sidekick, George Stephanopoulos. I didn’t watch it. Nor did I watch the Country Music Awards. I think we watched a rerun of a Wyatt Earp movie that night, much to the chagrin of the little lady.
I did however, listen carefully to the pundits regarding the interview. I have more faith in pundits than politicians. Unsurprisingly, I understand the interview was somewhat of a flop, much like the predictions are about Comey’s generic and defensive book. It got 9.8 million viewers, as compared to the 22 million viewers porn actress and media darling, Stormy Daniels got.
OK, in all honesty, I’m jealous of his 9.8 million viewers for the beginning of a book tour. Yes, I wish I had that type of audience when my book came out. I think I had 45-50 viewers, and ten of them were my family. But I assure you, I put that envy aside for this commentary.
It was said that George asked some tough questions… which Comey calmly deflected and George unsurprisingly did not follow up on. We did learn that Comey considers his wife a great source of advice and knowledge. That’s wonderful. But, then we learn Comey’s wife and daughters marched in an anti-Trump rally the day after Trump was inaugurated. Think about that – Trump was Comey’s boss. Trump hadn’t even gotten a chance to warm the chair behind the Resolute Desk and Comey’s family is out there marching against the man.
With all of Comey’s shenanigans coming to light, how many times have you thought of J. Edgar Hoover? I know I have but recall that I might be cynical. For those of you who don’t recall Hoover, he ruled the FBI, and apparently most presidents, with an iron fist for 48 years. He knew their dirty secrets and threatened to tell them – back when the media didn’t. In public, Hoover appeared as wholesome and American as they came, all the while blackmailing presidents and privately leading a life of debauchery. Hoover’s reign of terror ended upon his death in 1972, and for the most part the FBI has been seen as reasonably well run, disciplined, and dedicated to the cause of which they were established.
Now along comes James Comey and the cast of creatures under his employ. Before Mueller’s “Russian investigation” started, I recall a “60 Minutes” interview done with Director Comey in 2014. I remember being impressed with his countenance. He certainly seemed professional and a stand-up guy. He prophetically mentioned at the time, “you cannot trust people in power.”
From that point on it was all downhill with Mr. Comey There was the Clinton probe, the dropping of the Clinton probe, and then inexplicably picking it back up again…and announcing it just before the election. In a head-scratching announcement, the FBI Director handed the election to Donald Trump, a man he did not like nor trust we later learned. (If you don’t believe that, ask Hillary.) For the record, we still don’t know about those Clinton emails or her involvement with Russia.
Then came the information of the wire-tap of Trump’s office; Comey’s leaks to the press; Comey’s secret twitter account leaking under a pseudonym; acting FBI director Andrew McCabe’s lying before Congress and subsequent firing just before his 50th birthday retirement (government work on our dime must be a good gig); and who will ever forget Agent Peter Strzok, assigned to the “Russian investigation” and his attorney, Lisa Page, having an extra-marital affair with each other while texting peculiar statements seemingly detrimental to Trump’s election, including a hint of a some sort of nefarious plan on the chance Trump did get elected.
Adding to the “deep state” image is the other motley crew over at the Department of Justice. Loretta Lynch allowing Bill Clinton on her plane in AZ, of which Comey never came clean about; AG Jeff Sessions recusal of anything concerning Russia and seemingly Trump (what the hell is he there for?); and now it comes to light that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and his lawyer-wife both have representational ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton going back decades.
Regardless of what you might have thought or heard about the interview, has anyone considered what James Comey has done to the reputation of the FBI, arguably one of the most powerful organizations on earth? Ask yourself, with everything that is going on do you trust the FBI or Department of Justice?
Operating within the shadow of Congress, no wonder it’s called a Swamp.
That question keeps me up at night. Seriously.
My wife and I are blessed with ten grandchildren, which we love more than life itself. The oldest is eleven and the youngest is two months. I look at those little faces, so young, innocent, and full of promise and my heart bursts. Later though, I worry how much we have allowed our nation to degenerate, at least in my lifetime. What will those kiddos be facing one day? With every fiber of my being, I am certain those innocent little faces will never know the America we knew. I bet there are many of you fearing the same.
Our country has been turned upside down. What was once right is now wrong. American values, long a beacon to the entire world, is crumbling, eerily paralleling our roads and bridges.
Nearly half of the country is now taking some sort of undeserved government hand-out or scam, whether it be programs such as food stamps, fake workman’s comp claims, unemployment benefits, drug dealing, working for cash etc. There are government programs actually studying a minimum national income, regardless of whether people work – another giveaway program at the expense of people who do work hard. These cheats are people capable of honest work. As of the date of this writing, there are currently six million jobs available in this country.
The list of the supposed aggrieved grows larger by the day – Latin American nations allow their uneducated and poor cast-offs to illegally flee to us by the millions - to be educated, housed and fed by a shrinking American working class. The Left stands at the border with empty wallets and open arms, mostly for no other reason than to import more voters. When citizens demand this practice halted by Trump’s promised wall, it is met with a wave of unending assault by liberals berating us over their perception of our lack of empathy.
There is a segment of black people, who were never slaves, expecting reparations out of white people who were never slave holders, because of an appalling practice that existed over 150 years ago. The very concept does nothing but continue to fan the flames of both sides for an issue that has long been outlived and best be put behind us.
The small minority of the Godless in our country demand, of a nation built on Christian values, the removal of God from schools and public areas, only to be replaced by an appeasement of Muslim religious practices in the name of “understanding” of others. Again, the appeasement of a few at the cost of many.
Beautiful historical statues are being removed by cities, like thieves in the night, simply because they offend some, regardless of the fact that the removal offends others that liked the statues right where they were. They were costly works of art, beautifully produced, and usually placed in parks and recreational areas. As an act of compromise, why couldn’t they have just removed the name plaques?
Realizing there is strength in numbers, an LGB community that has become widely embraced today, morphed into an acronym that is as confusing as it is antagonistic. If you haven’t been keeping up, it is now LGBTQQIP2SAA: which is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit (2S), androgynous, and asexual. The result is we no longer know who will be in our bathroom, and if you don’t want confused Henry following your daughter into the bathroom, then it is you that is wrong.
Super-charged by a wave of commercials and advertisements from personal injury attorneys brazenly promising the supposedly aggrieved what is rightfully due them, too many Americans now consider themselves “victims.” They clog up the court systems, and our television, thus driving up insurance costs for all. Remember when we used to call those attorneys ambulance chasers? Remember when people would only take that which they had earned?
Speaking of attorneys, of which most are hard-working upstanding citizens, did anyone note this past week our right of the attorney-client privilege was usurped? President Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen had his office, home, and hotel room raided by the FBI. Seems they were searching for evidence that the president might have paid a porn actress hush money long before he ran for president. This act was met with virtually no outrage as the media ignored it nor explain how outrageous this was.
This circumvention of the law was directed, of course, at the behest of the “honorable” Robert Mueller. Remember Mueller, he is the guy that, over a year ago, was given unconstrained access to find out if Donald Trump colluded with the Russians to win the election, of which he has failed. Evidently, Mueller’s mandate included anything and everything he wanted investigated…except that which pertains to Bill and Hillary Clinton. (Might be a good time to investigate Congressmen though?) So now, rather than Russian interference, he decided to have Trump’s sex life investigated. There can be no reasonable connection, therefore it is not Mueller’s business. A cynical skeptic like me might believe this information will come in mighty handy during the 2020 election though.
Or perhaps it was just curiosity by Mueller over Stormy Daniels. Mr. Mueller, there are websites out there to satisfy your inquisitiveness.
Does anybody really care about the president’s sex life? And why would alleged sex between two consenting adults in a hotel room give the government the authority to bypass the attorney-client privilege? All of this seems nothing more than a slight-of-hand trick to take attention away from Trumps stated purpose of draining the Swamp.
Meanwhile, as the media continues to stoke the fires of the nonsense of Trump’s sex life to a salivating audience, a war of possible historical importance is brewing between Russia and America over the insignificant nation of Syria in the Middle East (where else?). Syria has a merciless dictator who with no problem killing children and babies horribly with gas. (He’d fit right in over at Planned Parenthood) Some scholars believe this escalating Syrian situation to be of more magnitude than the Bay of Pigs or could at least finally expose Russia’s weakness. And yet, the average young person on the street knows very little of the matter. Take your pick over which matter they know nothing about – Syria, Russia, or the Bay of Pigs.
Concerning rights, the liberal Left chips away daily at two of our most basic rights – speech and gun ownership. Once again, for reasons I cannot fathom, there is the media on the sidelines cheer-leading for the Left. All-too expensive, and increasingly irrelevant universities, funded heavily by tax-payers and combined with a growing troublesome student debt program, regularly allow for immature children to shut down any thought or opinion that doesn’t align with their own. Protesting and littering beats going to class. They are incited on by tenured liberal professors and overpaid administrators. Why would we subject our grandchildren to this hypocrisy and strapping them with so much debt?
And did you notice we now evidently take our direction on gun control from high school children that are ignorant of life experiences and the need for a well-armed militia to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. These kids spend most of their time following social media rather than actual studies. Think of the media exploitation of this sad point in our history.
At the same time the Left is screaming to take away Constitutional rights, we are required, through our taxes, to fork over more than half billion dollars per year to Planned Parenthood, so they can abort babies…regardless of our beliefs. Abortions continue to be the biggest killer in this country, and there is no end in sight, mostly because spineless Conservative politicians rail against it, but prefer the status quo, sitting on the sidelines shrugging.
The sheer size and power of companies like Google, Amazon, and Face Book continues to grow, unchecked for monopolistic practices, by a government too interested in political gamesmanship and their own power than to actually represent the working middle-class that voted for their representation. Some of these companies don’t even pay taxes.
Mega-businesses that were once apolitical are now dictating to their vendors, and even to some customers, on what side of an issue they must be in order to do business with them. Consider some banks are no longer loaning money to those involved in the NRA or arms production, a blatant coercion of American rights. But yet, a small bakery cannot deny serving some customers.
On the heels of the fiasco at the IRS, Mueller’s investigation/witch hunt has uncovered the fact that we can no longer trust other agencies such as the FBI or Department of Justice. The former has been led by political hacks, interested only in their own causes and protecting the Swamp, while holding on to enough power to ruin the lives of any individual. The latter, going back to the years of Clinton, has been either corrupt, biased, inept, or as in the case now, afraid of the Left.
States like Illinois, governed for decades with an iron fist by a greedy and ruthless Speaker of the House, sucking money from the state to his Chicago cronies and mayors, is on the verge of insolvency at best, or the pruning of promised pensions at worst, taxing their denizens into oblivion.
Or California threatening to secede from the Union and flaunting Federal laws…until such time as they are faced with disasters of which they are unable to afford. In the meantime, their homeless population is exploding. California is now even considering dividing into three separate states, which would give us more dingbat politicians roaming the halls of Washington.
Both states are losing residents at an alarming rate.
There is a quote, purportedly stated by a Scotsman named Alexander Tytler that seems to foretell the period of history our grandchildren may be facing, a period of which I seem to be utterly powerless to do anything about. Regardless of who penned this, it seems to me to be quite apropos today –
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” If you don’t believe that statement can be true, just look at the city of Chicago.
The Left’s all-out frenzied assault of the current occupant of the White House, regardless of the consequences or the will of the people, borders on hysteria, if not sedition. It is being assisted and financed by the Elitist Left which includes Hollywood, and those unctuous occupants of the Swamp. It’s as if they are actively assaulting the pilot of the plane we are all riding in.
In my opinion this current condition of what ails America was unleashed by the presidency of Barack Obama. Under his guidance, and plan, a virtual Pandora’s Box of decadence, civil disobedience, and a New World Order became more important than Americanism. For those of you that feel that perhaps a NWO is our future and will be better off, why do so many people still want to flock to America. If the rest of the world is so great, why don’t they stay where they are? It is my view that a NWO cannot come about without bringing America down to the standards of the rest of the world. Our forefathers fought and died valiantly to give us this great country we have grown up in and is the envy of the world.
I understand this commentary is both long and ominous. I still believe America can bounce back, as it has always done, but my fear is it will take longer than just the generation that includes my grandchildren.
All I can say to my grandchildren is “I’m sorry.”
Now hurtling at an alarming rate to the autumn of my life, my beard is white, my hair is getting silver, and my waistline seemingly is keeping pace with the national debt. Comments are made that I might resemble Jerry Garcia, Hemingway, or even Santa Claus. Not a bad lot to be thrown in with, but I would have preferred Kris Bryant or Aaron Rogers.
Along with this time of life comes the various maladies a person of my age and girth might have. Most of my lifestyle was shaped by following the advice of Winston Churchill - “Never run when you can walk, never walk when you can sit, and never sit when you can lay down.”
The wife mentioned earlier this year that perhaps it was time for us to get in shape. I replied that round is a shape, but she was unimpressed. Methinks she might have gained a few pounds so now it was time for “me and her” to get in shape. Funny how that works. I suspected and feared it might also affect future meals, a fact that was soon realized. At any rate, we joined a health club facility a block away. (We drive to it!) The wife went so far as to get us a trainer, just so we would have to go.
Now, this trainer she hired happens to be a young man of about thirty years, over half my age, and has muscles on his muscles. He likes to wear his shorts and T-shirts tight, flashing his million-dollar white choppers every chance he gets. Little bugger is also a know-it-all and I hate him. He takes my previously sore body and makes it even sorer. And he likes that too.
But there are some other observations I have made at this gym I suspect goes on at other gyms as well.
People like me, whether because of age, size and/or both are not allowed to look at the pretty young girls that work out there. This is not a commandment laid down by my wife either. I have noticed that these 20-something gals primp their pony-tails, put on light make-up, wear flashy workout clothes, and over-priced footwear, parading through all parts of the gym, smiling. However, if someone of my ilk happens to get caught glancing, or even if one of these gals just walks into my line of vision, I am met with either looks of hostility for allowing my eyes to moving across her being, or eyes of terror, as if I am Charles Manson in an old, holy, Cubs T-shirt that is a size too small. The smiles must be saved for the studs.
Conversely, the young studs in the place want you to look. They pump their weights, then relax by preening, flexing, breathing hard and placing themselves in a spot where the most eyeballs might land on their muscles. They are not as fashion conscious as their female counter-parts, but it seems the tighter the better.
Since they are allowing me to attend, tattoo’s must only be optional. I think my wife and I might often be the only people under fifty without one. Someone should open up a tattoo parlor next door to this place – one could get a tattoo and walk over to show it off.
There are people my age and older that attend as well. Funny though, they are all in reasonably thin shape and I suspect it is that ever-decreasing subset of humans whose metabolism never slowed down or they were blessed with “thin” genes. You know the type – they eat and drink like the rest of us, but never seem to gain weight. Don’t know about you, but they make me sick.
So, anyway, back to our Know-it-all trainer. At thirty, he is evidently an expert nutritionist as well. He claims an iron will to only eat that which has been determined to be healthy and, in my mind, totally inedible. He keeps giving my wife all these ideas for when she prepares the meals. I realize that in this age of political correctness, I have mentioned my wife preparing the meals. So that you understand, when we got married we mutually decided she would be the Director of Meal Preparation and I would be the Director of Meal Consumption. We’re both pretty good at it. That formula has worked well for 38 years. Now the Know-it-all is trying to mess that up.
Well, I have to report that in the first month of hitting the gym I…gained five pounds.
Of course, we all agree that it is just muscle.
